Yay, Capitalism!

Capitalism is defined as an economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately owned and operated for a private profit. Like anything else, it has its strengths and flaws.

Pros:

  • Lots of freedom
  • Choose to run your own business or get a job
  • Consumers get highest variety of products and services
  • Room for innovation without the government interfering
  • The market bends to the will of the customers
  • Right to own property and develop it as you choose
  • Right to earn as much money as you want
  • Highest standards of living
Cons:
  • Not everyone can live comfortably
  • Imbalance of equality among classes
  • Some believe it leads to unfair competition
  • Society becomes very materialistic
All in all , Capitalism is awesome.

Globalization

One of the many advantages of globalization is the growth of communication. Due to advancements of technology it has become increasingly easier for people around the world to contact each other.  This means more trading opportunities which lead to economic growth among countries. Due to globalization, the word has definitely become more connected.

Despite this globalization has some negative effects.  Some companies desire cheap, fast labor and as a result outsourcing occurs. For some Americans, this means losing their jobs to another person overseas. Capitalism continues to grow along with the mass production of products.

Poverty Culture

Poverty culture can be defined as: "The view that the poor have a different value system that contribute to their poverty". This culture can be considered the main cause of poverty and leads to poverty lasting from generation to generation. Instead of embracing social mobility, there is something holding back plenty of the poor. They have grwon accustomed to the norms and values of their lifestyle and remain in this comfortable place.
The term "culture of poverty" was first used by Oscar Lewis in his studies of poor, Mexican communities. They were socialized into certain behaviors and plenty of trends are apparent throughout different communities.

The effect of popular culture.

Popular media is reflected greatly in our culture; what we wear, eat, and value. The blog topic this week is to discuss what institutions effect popular media. In my opinion, the elite definitely play an influencial role in popular culture.

The masses constantly look to the wealthy elite for the latest trends; they set an example and the rest follow. Their wealth plays a huge part in the elite's infleunce over society. The world is essentially ruled by money which is exaclty why the rich have always been highly influencial.

We see the clothes they wear and the products they buy; certain items become a symbol of wealth in an increasingly materialistic world. As a result, the masses become entranced with mimicking the elite.

Symbolic Interactionalism

So, this week's blog topic discusses how symbolic interactioanlism fits in the the criteria of sociology. By definition, symbolic interactionalsim is a study of communication between individuals, and between individuals and society, based on symbols and meanings, as in the use of language.

Symbolic Interactionalist believe that shared meanings are developed among a population as a result of interactions between people. So, a persn's values and ideals are greatly influenced by thier surroundings.

In my opinion, symbolic interactionalsim fits well into the sociology perspective. It accounts for significant analysis of roles, socialization, communication, and actions.

Functionalism or Marxism? FUN FUN FUN FUN.

Which of these theories explain our society better and will continue to do so in the future? In my opinion, Marixism just doesn't work out. Yes, the working class is continually exploited, but I cannot see the world evolving into a classless society. Marxist believe that capitalism is bad since it causes so many people to live in poverty. Not everyone can be equal, that's just how the world works. Functionalism explains this. The functionalist theory accounts for the process of socialization and explains the roles each person plays in society.  Functionalism does a much better job at explaining society and will continue to do so. Marxism is the spawn of the devil.   Marxism is bad.

Republican Primary

Mitt Romney

The Republican Primary is when a vote is taken by the party to nominate someone who they see as fitting to be a presidential candidate. I'm not all that into politics so this is the first time I've ever heard of something like this. This primary has been recently held in Florida. The two leading competitors were Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. Results show that Romney as won in the Florida Polls.

He won 54 per cent of the Hispanic vote, brushing off attacks from Newt that he was the most "anti-immigrant" candidate in the race. He won 51 percent of women's votes compared to
Gingrich's 28. The largest population that
contributed to his votes were the rich, with
61 percent supporting him.

It has now been reported that he also won in the Nevada poll.
