Poverty Culture

Poverty culture can be defined as: "The view that the poor have a different value system that contribute to their poverty". This culture can be considered the main cause of poverty and leads to poverty lasting from generation to generation. Instead of embracing social mobility, there is something holding back plenty of the poor. They have grwon accustomed to the norms and values of their lifestyle and remain in this comfortable place.
The term "culture of poverty" was first used by Oscar Lewis in his studies of poor, Mexican communities. They were socialized into certain behaviors and plenty of trends are apparent throughout different communities.

The effect of popular culture.

Popular media is reflected greatly in our culture; what we wear, eat, and value. The blog topic this week is to discuss what institutions effect popular media. In my opinion, the elite definitely play an influencial role in popular culture.

The masses constantly look to the wealthy elite for the latest trends; they set an example and the rest follow. Their wealth plays a huge part in the elite's infleunce over society. The world is essentially ruled by money which is exaclty why the rich have always been highly influencial.

We see the clothes they wear and the products they buy; certain items become a symbol of wealth in an increasingly materialistic world. As a result, the masses become entranced with mimicking the elite.

Symbolic Interactionalism

So, this week's blog topic discusses how symbolic interactioanlism fits in the the criteria of sociology. By definition, symbolic interactionalsim is a study of communication between individuals, and between individuals and society, based on symbols and meanings, as in the use of language.

Symbolic Interactionalist believe that shared meanings are developed among a population as a result of interactions between people. So, a persn's values and ideals are greatly influenced by thier surroundings.

In my opinion, symbolic interactionalsim fits well into the sociology perspective. It accounts for significant analysis of roles, socialization, communication, and actions.
